BACKGROUND:
San Mateo County is responsible for providing necessary medical care to its medically indigent population. This includes professional specialty orthopedic services and the management and supervision of those services. Duc Marcel Nguyen, MD has provided professional specialty orthopedic services at San Mateo Medical Center (SMMC) for the past seventeen years.

DISCUSSION:
The County's need for orthopedic services continues to increase. SMMC will be able to meet this need through contracts with Dr. Nguyen and other orthopedists. Dr. Nguyen will continue to provide, at a minimum, the same level of services as under the previous agreement.

County Administrative Memorandum B-1 provides that contracts for physicians are exempt from the Request for Proposals process.

The agreement and Resolution have been reviewed and approved by County Counsel as to form.

The Resolution contains the County's standard provisions allowing amendment of the County fiscal obligations by a maximum of $25,000 (in aggregate).

The agreement contributes to the Shared Vision 2025 outcome of a Healthy Community by providing access to specialty orthopedic services to residents of San Mateo County.
