Video
| | | | | The Board recessed to Closed Session at 1:09 p.m. and reconvened at 1:38 p.m. with the following report made by John C. Beiers, County Counsel:
The Board authorized the filing of an amicus brief in support of a Colorado Civil Rights Commission in the 2015 decision by the Colorado Court of Appeals in the matter of Craig v. Masterpiece Cakeshop, Inc. Masterpiece Cakeshop, Inc. has appealed this Colorado decision to the U.S. Supreme Court, and oral argument is scheduled for December 5, 2017. The crux of the case is as follows: In 2012, a same-sex couple visited a bakery in Colorado and requested the owner bake them a wedding cake to celebrate their nuptials. The baker informed the couple that he does not make wedding cakes for same-sex couples. The couple then filed a discrimination case.
The San Mateo County LGBTQ Commission recommended that the Board of Supervisors weigh in on this decision, and the Board in today’s Closed Session has unanimously agreed to do so. | | |
