BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION:
The County has conducted a recruitment for the position of Deputy County Executive. Adam Ely has been appointed by the County Executive as the best candidate for this position based on his executive leadership experience.

Adam Ely currently serves as the Interim Deputy County Executive. He joined San Mateo County in 2013 as a Deputy County Attorney and later transitioned into the role of Director of the Project Development Unit. In his current capacity as Interim Deputy County Executive, Adam demonstrates strong executive leadership skills, overseeing intricate countywide initiatives across key County Departments, including the Sheriff's Office, District Attorney, Public Safety Communications, Probation, and Emergency Management. During his previous role as the Director of the Project Development Unit, Adam adeptly managed an extensive portfolio of capital construction projects, encompassing healthcare and emergency facilities. He played a pivotal role in the inception of sustainability initiatives, skillfully negotiated complex agreements, and fostered collaboration among diverse stakeholders. Adam's background as a Deputy County Attorney enhances his skill set with legal expertise and litigation experience, further strengthening his proficiency at problem-solving. He holds a Juris Doctorate from the UCLA School of Law and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from UCLA.

The Charter requires the Board of Supervisors to confirm appointments of department heads nominated by the County Executive.
