BACKGROUND:

The San Mateo County Event Center (“Event Center”), located in the City of San Mateo,  serves as an emergency evacuation center for San Mateo County residents, hosts conferences and conventions, and is the site of the San Mateo County Fair. The Event Center is managed by a non-profit organization, the San Mateo County Exposition and Fair Association (“Association”), whose Directors are appointed by the Board of Supervisors. 

 

The Association’s Board of Directors (“Board of Directors”) consists of 11 Directors, all of whom must be residents of San Mateo County.  Directors are each allowed to serve up to four three-year terms.

 

DISCUSSION:

Thomas Ames has served on the Board of Directors since September 2014 and is being recommended to serve for a fourth term. Raymond Juballa, Rowena Loloma Meafua, and Theresa Faapuaa have each served on the Board of Directors since 2020 and are each seeking reappointment for a second term.  All are San Mateo County residents.

 

During Thomas Ames’s time on the Board of Directors, he has served on several committees, held the position of Secretary/Treasurer for one term, Vice President for two terms, and President for two terms. His volunteer activities include San Mateo County Civil Grand Jury 2007, San Mateo County Historical Association Board of Directors (presently serving) and, past member of St. John's Cemetery Board of Trustees. He is also a volunteer with Mission Hospice of San Mateo. Thomas retired from the Burlingame Fire Department with the rank of Captain after 36 years of service. He attended California State University Long Beach and the University of San Francisco and holds a Bachelor of Science degree.

 

Raymond Juballa lives in Foster City and was an Instructional Support Technician/ Farm Hand at Merced College before he transferred to Menlo College to pursue a business degree. Raymond has been involved in the San Mateo County Fair for many years and served on the Junior Fair Board for four years. He continues to volunteer as an Adult Resource Leader for 4-H. As a member of the Board of Directors, Raymond hopes to improve accessibility to the diverse communities of San Mateo County.

 

During Rowena Loloma Meafua’s time on the Board of Directors, she has supported the leadership of CEO Dana Stoehr, the Board of Supervisors and County Executive Mike Callagy in the activation of a COVID-19 testing center, vaccine clinic, and emergency response center for the CZU fires. In addition to supporting the Event Center for emergency use, she is supportive of its opportunities to bring joy through community events such as the County Fair.  She is proud to represent as a resident of the North County and Pacific Islands residents on this board.

 

Theresa Faapuaa has served as a Master Teacher at Peninsula Family Service, Board Member Trustee of the Bayshore School District, Commissioner of Daly City Library, and as Jefferson High School Booster President. Theresa really enjoys helping her diverse community, and she respects and acknowledges efforts related to the achievement of Equity.
