Recommendation for the appointment of Farah Yasmeen Shaikh to the San Mateo County Arts Commission, representing District 4, for an initial partial term ending December 31, 2024.

BACKGROUND:

The Arts Commission was created to promote and encourage the arts, to serve in an advisory capacity to the Board of Supervisors, to prepare and update the County’s strategic and cultural plan, and act as a liaison with arts organizations in order to ensure collaboration and coordination related to culture and art activities in San Mateo County.

 

DISCUSSION:

Farah Yasmeen Shaikh is being recommended to represent District 4 on the Arts Commission for an initial partial term ending December 31, 2024 to coincide with District 4 Supervisor’s term in office. The seat was formerly held by Edward Sweeney who is no longer on the commission.

 

Farah Yasmeen Shaikh is an internationally acclaimed Kathak performer, choreographer and instructor, and Founder & Artistic Director of Noorani Dance. In addition to training students of Noorani Dance, Farah’s teaching experience includes ODC School and Alonzo King LINES Ballet in San Francisco, India Community Center in the Silicon Valley, and various academic and arts institutions throughout the U.S., as well as being a guest choreographer for the World Dance Program at Alvin Ailey Extension in New York City.  She resides in Menlo Park.
