BACKGROUND:
The Employee of the Month program was established in December 1984 to recognize and honor County employees who consistently demonstrate an outstanding level of performance.
Our Employee of the Month for February 2023 is Derrick Harp, a Communications Dispatcher II in the Public Safety Communications Department.
DISCUSSION:
Derrick has been with the County for over 5 years. He started as a Communication Dispatcher I in 2017 and promoted to a Communication Dispatcher II in 2018. Derrick is known to his colleagues as a team player who often assists his peers without being asked. He demonstrates excellent customer service when working with the public. Derrick also serves as an active participant of the Department’s new Wellbeing Committee.
During Derrick’s tenure, he has received notable awards which include the San Mateo County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Peer Recognition Award in 2019 for providing Cardio Pulmonary Services (CPS) instructions in East Palo Alto. In 2022, he received the Outstanding Performance Award from the Communication Managers Association for his dedication and lifesaving instructions during a medical emergency. On June 21, 2022, he received a commendation for his service during the Edgewood Fire.
Recently, Derrick received four emergency medical dispatch (EMD) calls that involved baby deliveries. The four baby deliveries happened over the span of a few weeks. Derrick was professional and courteous during each call. He was able to maintain each caller on the line and give them pre-arrival instructions while keeping them calm. All four babies were delivered while on the call while he continued to provide support until help arrived.
Our County is fortunate to have Derrick Harp as an outstanding employee.
