BACKGROUND:
Measure K is the half-cent general sales tax initially approved by San Mateo County voters in November 2012 and extended in November 2016 for a total of thirty years.

On June 1, 2021, the County Executive's Office (CEO) initiated an Office of Arts and Culture (OAC) to strengthen the organizational structure of the San Mateo County Arts Commission (SMCAC) with the ultimate goal of elevating the arts and culture as a key driver in enhancing quality of life, education, and the economy in San Mateo County through coordination of art and culture-related comprehensive policies and programs.

The OAC's work includes the adoption and successful roll-out of strategies and goals identified in the SMCAC Strategic Cultural Plan adopted by the Board of Supervisors on February 25, 2020.

On August 2, 2022, the Board of Supervisors formally established the OAC under the County Executive's Office (Resolution No. 079097). In doing so, the Board recognized the value and multi-faceted contributions of arts and culture to support Board priorities in the areas of community wellness, vitality, equity, and education and as a stimulus for the local economy.
