BACKGROUND:
Based on data from the California Department of Education, one-third of children and teenagers in San Mateo County do not eat the recommended two servings of fruit per day. Furthermore, the latest California Health Interview Survey showed that 30% of teens and 52% of all adult residents in San Mateo County are overweight or obese. The Get Healthy San Mateo Collaborative and the CalFresh Healthy Living (CFHL) Program are actively working to improve the health of families and communities in the County. CFHL is a part of a U.S. Department of Agriculture Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - Education (SNAP-Ed) initiative, which provides federal funds to promote healthy eating, physical activity, and access to nutritious foods to reduce the incidence of chronic disease in low-income communities. San Mateo County has been a SNAP-Ed grantee since 1998.

On September 17, 2019, this Board approved the acceptance of a grant agreement with the California Department of Public Health for the SNAP-Ed Grant in an amount not to exceed $1,600,209.
