title

Adopt a resolution authorizing an amendment to the agreement with Michael Trindade, MD extending the term by one month through November 30, 2022, and increasing the amount payable under the agreement by $60,000 to an amount not to exceed $560,000.

body

BACKGROUND:

Dr. Trindade has been providing orthopedic services to patients at San Mateo Medical Center (SMMC) since August 2011 and has expressed interest in continuing to provide those services.  During this time Dr. Trindade has also provided medico-administrative services and leadership as SMMC’s Medical Director for Orthopedics.

In November 2021 the County and Dr. Trindade entered into an agreement for orthopedic surgery services for the term of November 1, 2021, through October 31, 2022 in an amount not to exceed $500,000.

Negotiations for renewal of his contract are continuing, requiring a further extension of his currently amended agreement.

DISCUSSION:

Under this amendment Dr. Trindade has agreed to continue to provide orthopedic surgery services for one additional month, to allow for additional time to negotiate a new agreement.

County Administrative Memorandum B-1 provides that contracts for physicians are exempt from the Request for Proposals process.

The amendment and resolution have been reviewed and approved by the County Attorney as to form.

The resolution contains the County’s standard provisions allowing amendment of the County fiscal obligations by a maximum of $25,000 (in aggregate).

It is anticipated that 100% of joint surgery wait times are of one month or less.

FISCAL IMPACT:

The term of the amended agreement is November 1, 2021, through November 30, 2022. The amendment increases the amount payable under the agreement by $60,000 to an amount not to exceed $560,000 for the thirteen-month term.  Funds in the amount of $60,000 are included in the SMMC FY 2022-23 Adopted Budget.

Expenses at SMMC are covered by fees for services or third-party payors whenever possible. The portion of expenses for services provided to the medically indigent or to those covered by programs that do not meet the full costs of care is covered by the County’s General Fund contribution to SMMC and is within the existing annual appropriation.
