BACKGROUND:

The mission of the San Mateo County Commission on Aging (CoA) is to improve the quality of life for seniors in San Mateo County through the promotion of independence, self-sufficiency, mental and physical health, as well as community involvement.

DISCUSSION:

Jeffrey Austin is being recommended to serve on a seat vacated by Walter Batara, who is resigning from the commission at the end of his term on June 30, 2022. Jeffrey served in the US Marine Corps and currently works for WE Hope in a Security Supervisor position. He is active in the Senior Advisory Committee of East Palo Alto, has been a youth sports coach and is a preacher at St. Mark AME Zion Church, with an extensive background in community outreach and resource assistance. He brings an energetic awareness of senior issues in the county and would be a dynamic addition to the Commission on Aging.

Eileen Barsi is being recommended to serve on a seat vacated by Elsa Agasid. Eileen is a Pacifica resident with an extensive background in health care services. She has a Graduate Certificate in Gerontology and has worked in Community Benefits programs for Dignity Health, Catholic Healthcare West and Seton Medical Center. She has also been active in various community groups and with her church. Eileen brings comprehensive experience in helping seniors navigate and access services available to them.

Irene Liana is being recommended to serve on a seat vacated by Jean Hastie. A San Carlos resident, Irene is very active with the Villages of San Mateo County, having been a co-founder and currently serving on the Board of Directors. She has a career background in Human Resource Management for various corporations. Her civic engagement includes involvement with the San Carlos Human Relations Commission, the San Carlos Senior Center Advisory Board and the St. Vincent de Paul Ministry. Irene recently graduated from the San Mateo Chamber of Commerce Leadership Program, and would be capable and interested in handling leadership roles in the Commission on Aging.

Joyce Porter is being recommended to serve on a seat formerly held by Joan Kilroe, who resigned. Joyce is a Redwood City resident who is retired following a Legal and Compliance career in a variety of positions with Aetna. She is a newcomer to San Mateo County, moving from North Carolina after being the sole caregiver for her husband during his final six years. She is motivated to become involved in advocating for senior services and sharing her experiences as a person of color with the Commission on Aging.
