Recommendation for the appointment of Carlos Serrano-Quan to the San Mateo County Planning Commission, representing District 5, for an initial partial term ending December 31, 2024.

BACKGROUND:

The Planning Commission serves the County and its communities by preparing, administering, and enforcing land use plans and development regulations that protect public safety, preserve agricultural and environmental resources, address housing and transportation needs, and create healthy and prosperous communities, in a manner that fosters community engagement and provides exceptional levels of service.  Pursuant to the San Mateo County Ordinance Code, a Commissioner shall be appointed to the Planning Commission from each of the County’s five supervisorial Districts.

 

 

 

DISCUSSION:

As per the bylaws for the Commission, commissioners serve for a term coinciding with the Supervisor’s term. As such, Carlos Serrano-Quan’s term will reflect an initial partial term ending December 31, 2024 upon approval of this appointment. He is being recommended to a seat formerly held by Mario Santacruz.

 

Carlos Serrano-Quan is a Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Sequoia Commercial Group (SCG), a commercial real estate brokerage with 4 offices in the San Francisco Bay Area. Recently awarded the prestigious CoStar Power Broker Awards for highest volume of deals in Q1 of 2020, SCG and Carlos has helped his private clients with complex commercial real estate transactions specializing in sourcing investment opportunities for local and international developers, investors, and asset management. Carlos has also served in active-duty in the U.S. Army and is a Disabled American Veteran. Carlos has proudly served the City and County of San Francisco in various positions. He was appointed by the S.F. Board of Supervisors and the Mayor as a Citizen’s Advisory Committee member of the San Francisco Department of Aging and Adult Services; and a member of the San Francisco Department of Youth and Families Community Advisory Committee. Among Carlos' favorite activities is helping his local community and national organizations by serving in various roles, such as the former Executive Director of 3 community based nonprofit organizations, Pre-Trial Diversion, HomeownershipSF, Chinatown Youth Center, and Chinese Newcomers Service Center; and several National Nonprofits, the National Asian Pacific Center on Aging; the American Diabetes Association, and Goodwill Industries. Carlos is fluent in Cantonese and Conversant in Spanish.
