BACKGROUND:

The Arts Commission was created to promote and encourage the arts, to serve in an advisory capacity to the Board of Supervisors, to prepare and update the County’s strategic and cultural plan, and act as a liaison with arts organizations in order to ensure collaboration and coordination related to culture and art activities in San Mateo County.

DISCUSSION:

Victoria Magbilang is being recommended to serve on a seat representing District 5, formerly held by Sam Stewart. Approval of this appointment would be for an existing partial term ending December 31, 2022.

Victoria Magbilang is a graphic designer who resides in Daly City. In addition to her role as a creative professional, she has been advocating for the arts in her community for many years.  This began with her volunteer work at her children’s elementary school in creating and advising a student Poster Club, chairing their Talent Show, and, more recently, through her position as President of the Parent Teacher Student Association at Jefferson High School. She is the founding Program Director for the Daly City Public Library Associates’ (DCPLA) Daly City Youth Poet Laureate Program, the first program of its type in San Mateo County.  She is also the Executive Director for DCPLA which will be launching the annual Daly City Art & Lit Fest in Fall 2022. Along with her professional projects, Victoria is in the process of realizing her vision to put a mural at Top of the Hill, working with Art Club students from Jefferson High School, the Bay Area Mural Program, and Dragonfly Community Arts.
