BACKGROUND:
The 60 Inch Culvert Replacement Project at Bear Gulch Road (Project) is located on Bear Gulch Road in the San Gregorio area of unincorporated San Mateo County. The existing 60 inch corrugated metal pipe has severely corroded from age and must be removed and replaced.

DISCUSSION:
The Department of Public Works (Department) developed the Project plans and specifications to replace the existing culvert pipe. The improvements will include, in general: excavating the roadway and embankments; installing a temporary clear water bypass system; installing temporary trench shoring; removing the existing pipe and replacing it with a steel reinforced polyethylene pipe by open trench method; lowering the outlet side of the pipe approximately six inches in order to achieve fish passage criterion; installing a concrete headwall to support the roadway and pipe inlet; installing rock dissipators at the pipe outlet; backfilling the pipe; and paving the road with asphalt concrete.
