BACKGROUND:

San Mateo Medical Center (SMMC) continuously seeks opportunities to enhance its ability to provide access to quality medical care for the residents of San Mateo County.

Installing ceiling lifts would safely support providing personal care, patient positioning, diagnosis, and other activities in specific situations. Ceiling lifts would provide a significant measure of safety for staff and patients when moving patients that weigh over 400 pounds or when a patient’s movement is limited. Ceiling lifts will also allow staff to provide the best possible care to prevent skin breakdown, improve pulmonary function, and improve other health-related conditions.

DISCUSSION:

SMMC has requested the Department of Public Works (Department) to evaluate the construction feasibility and cost estimates to install ceiling lifts to improve patient care and safety. Ceiling lifts will offer improvements in the health and welfare of the patients and staff of SMMC.

The proposed project will include evaluating various patient rooms of the SMMC, including those in the Intensive Care Unit, to ensure the infrastructure of the ceilings can withstand the weight limits required for the ceiling lifts.

County Counsel has approved this ATR as to form.

FISCAL IMPACT:

Funding for the $60,000 ATR will allow the Department to evaluate rooms within the SMMC for the installation of ceiling lifts. There is no additional impact to the General Fund as funding is provided by the SMMC Capital Fund.
