BACKGROUND:
On August 4, 2021, a California Board Pharmacy inspection was conducted at the San Mateo Medical Center's (SMMC) Pharmacy. As a result of the inspection, SMMC's Pharmacy was found to be out of compliance with California Pharmacy Government Owned (PHE) License PHE 53569, which requires that outpatient and inpatient pharmacy needs be kept separate with unique ingress and egress for medications associated with outpatients and inpatients.

DISCUSSION:
SMMC's Pharmacy has an active project to install a dispensing carousel for all inpatient medications. SMMC has requested the Department of Public Works (Department) to assist with the design, programming, and construction cost estimates for the proposed Pharmacy Renovation Project as required to comply with the License requirements. SMMC would like to have the design and construction of this project coincide with the Pharmacy Carousel Project for synergy and project savings. By combining this Project with the Pharmacy Carousel Project, the requirement to comply with PHE 53569 for separating inpatient and outpatient medications would be fulfilled. The County will see improved operational effectiveness of inpatient and outpatient pharmacies through completing this project.
