BACKGROUND:

Late on Wednesday, February 23rd, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a military invasion of the sovereign nation of Ukraine. In the first weeks of the invasion, the Russian military has conducted multiple bombings and attacks across Ukraine, killing and injuring soldiers and civilians. The attacks have been strongly condemned by President Biden and other global leaders.

DISCUSSION:

Many members of the Ukrainian community call San Mateo County home. More than 3 million men, women, and children have already been displaced in Ukraine. Our Ukrainian neighbors are undergoing a period of significant hardship and grief during this time.

San Mateo County is a welcoming community that has welcomed refugees and immigrants from across the world. San Mateo County is also a community that stands for peace. The expression of support for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people will allow San Mateo County to show solidarity with the millions of Ukrainian people around the world and in San Mateo County who are facing incredible anxiety, loss, and displacement. This, in turn, will make us stronger as a community.
