BACKGROUND:
As a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the State of California created a free meal delivery program for older adults called the "Great Plates Delivered" Program. This program was administered locally by participating jurisdictions, and the County of San Mateo administered this program for all San Mateo County communities. Between May 8, 2020 and July 9, 2021 this program delivered a total of 2,929,911 meals to 4,689 older adults in San Mateo County. These meals were prepared by a total of 84 local restaurants and caterers, who made and delivered three meals per day, six days per week. This program invested $64.5 million into the local economy and supported several hundred jobs.
DISCUSSION:
Great Plates Delivered was established on an extremely compressed timeline and many participating restaurants had to simultaneously navigate the challenges of operating during a global pandemic, adjust to fast-changing program needs, and learn how to work with a county government for the first time. Despite these many challenges, the participating restaurants and caterers did an outstanding job to meet the needs of vulnerable older adults in San Mateo County. Reviews for Great Plates Delivered were extremely positive, and in addition to protecting older adults from COVID-19, this program improved the health of many participants by increasing access to a healthy and balanced diet.
