DISCUSSION:

The Great Plates program was an amazing multi-departmental effort that provided restaurant meals to over 3,500 low income seniors throughout the pandemic.  The program ended July 9, 2021.  The County Great Plates team surveyed recipients and learned that 300 Daly City and South San Francisco residents were homebound and still needed meals delivered.

County staff learned the weekend before that the cities couldn't do the deliveries.  The County Great Plates Team consisting of 30 County employees from Adult and Aging Services, Office of Sustainability, the County Libraries and County Counsel’s Office volunteered to do client intake and prepare routes, deliver meals and get an emergency contract in place for ongoing meal delivery.  By Monday, July 12th, the volunteers organized and delivered 600 meals, (two meals per client) which were prepared by the Sheriff's Office to 300 very grateful seniors residing throughout Daly City and South San Francisco.  By the next meal delivery on Wednesday, July 14th, the contract team had a delivery contract in place. Without the delivery volunteers, those 300 North County seniors might have gone without a nutritious meal for three days and now meal delivery is secure for the upcoming months with the new contract.

Rallying to organize and deliver meals to seniors in need of delivered meals on such short notice and get an emergency contract in place so quickly exemplifies the community spirit and concern for our residents that this team of County employees and all County employees bring to work every day.

Our County is fortunate to have the County Great Plates Team as an outstanding team.
