BACKGROUND:

San Mateo County Parks Foundation: The San Mateo County Parks Foundation (“Parks Foundation”) was established to provide additional financial support for the recreational, environmental, and educational programs and projects of the San Mateo County Parks Department (“Department”). 

 

John and Gwen Smart Foundation: The John and Gwen Smart Foundation (“Smart Foundation”) makes donations to the Department for the exclusive benefit of the Coyote Point Recreation Area (“Coyote Point”).  Although the Smart Foundation focuses on arts, education, medicine, and environmental issues, this philanthropic organization has funded many improvements throughout Coyote Point, including new picnic tables, park-wide paving, and the renovation of the Beach Group Picnic Area.

 

Mounted Patrol of San Mateo County: The Mounted Patrol of San Mateo County (“Mounted Patrol”) is an equestrian organization that provides search and rescue volunteer services and donations to the Department for several County parks, including Edgewood, Huddart, Wunderlich, Pescadero, Sam McDonald, and San Pedro Valley.

In Fiscal Year 2020-21, the Parks Foundation provided the Department with cash donations totaling $206,317 for the following projects and programs:

Smart Foundation

Similarly, in Fiscal Year 2020-21, the Smart Foundation provided the Department with a $50,000 cash donation that will be used for the Coyote Point Eucalyptus Tree Inventory project that is expected to begin in FY 2021-22.

 

Mounted Patrol of San Mateo County

The Department received $11,739.60 from Mounted Patrol for a trail clearing project completed in Pescadero Creek County Park. The project consisted of removing trees, brush trimming, treading, and the removal of invasive species.

 

County Counsel has reviewed and approved the resolution as to form.

 

FISCAL IMPACT:

There is no impact on Net County Cost. A year-end Appropriation Transfer Request (“ATR”) will be presented to the Board of Supervisors on September 28, 2021 in order to properly recognize unanticipated revenue from these donations for FY 2020-21.
