Approve an Appropriation Transfer Request (ATR) in the amount of $58,746 to reflect and record unanticipated revenue from the U.S. Department of Justice - Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) 2020 Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grant Program, establishing a budget appropriation.

BACKGROUND:
The Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grant Program, through the U.S. Department of Justice BJA and California Office of Emergency Services, offers an opportunity for state and units of local government forensic laboratories to improve forensic science practices through research, technology, training, equipment, and supplies. This grant program also assists with improving laboratory infrastructure and analysis capacity so that forensic cases can be processed efficiently and cost effectively. These improvements are critical to helping the criminal justice system use the full potential of forensic technology.
DISCUSSION:
The Sheriff’s Office applied for and has been awarded the 2020 Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grant Program in the amount of $58,746 for a period commencing January 1, 2021, to December 31, 2021. Funding from this grant will be used for training expenses and purchasing equipment for use by laboratory personnel in evidence examinations. The grant will assist with operational costs, including the training of examiners in the Latent Print and Firearms Sections, and the purchase of laboratory furniture.
FISCAL IMPACT:
This ATR accepts unanticipated revenue of $58,746 from the U.S. Department of Justice - Bureau of Justice Assistance. There is no Net County Cost associated with this action.
