RECOMMENDATION:

title

Adopt a resolution in support of Assembly Bill 1527 (Ting) Seton Medical Center: seismic safety.

body

BACKGROUND:

In late 2020, Advanced Healthcare Management Corporation (AHMC) Healthcare purchased Seton Medical Center, a 357-bed hospital located in Daly City. On

February 19, 2021, Assembly Member Phil Ting introduced AB 1527 that would create a waiver process for Seton Medical Center to comply with state law regarding hospital retrofits.

DISCUSSION:

Seton Medical Center in Daly City has endured years of uncertainty due to bankruptcy and changes in ownership, resulting in it falling behind in complying with state law regarding hospital seismic retrofits. Current law requires Seton to complete a seismic retrofit by July 1, 2022. Seton’s current owner AHMC have indicated that they need an additional 6 months to comply. AB 1527 (Ting) would authorize the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development to grant Seton a waiver of up to one year to comply with seismic retrofit requirements.

The bill is scheduled to be heard in the Assembly Health Committee on April 20, 2021. The office of Assembly Member Ting has asked for your Board’s support of this measure.
