BACKGROUND:

The rate of anti-Asian hate crimes has increased by nearly 150% according to the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism. The national spike in anti-Asian hate crimes have prompted counties across the country to implement actions that expand and clarify hate crime laws.

DISCUSSION:

Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders account for 30% of the population in San Mateo County. The number of hate crimes is anticipated to be much higher due to the large number of hate crimes that go unreported.

It is critical to prevent and address bias and xenophobia against the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. Action must be taken to protect the Asian American and Pacific Islander community, ensuring that the County of San Mateo is a hate free zone for all, especially for our most vulnerable communities.
