BACKGROUND:
Peninsula Clean Energy Authority (PCEA) initiated the Electric Vehicle (EV) Ready program in September 2020 to offer technical assistance and financial incentives for electric vehicle charging installations at workplaces and multi-unit residential dwellings in San Mateo County. This program has $4,000,000 in funding and will be available for four years.

The County applied for the program on November 5, 2020 to receive funds to support the installation of 124 charging ports in Parking Structure 2 at County Center in Redwood City. PCEA accepted the County into the program and provided a Fund Reservation Agreement to award the County $248,000 to fund the installation of EV charging infrastructure.

DISCUSSION:
Construction of Parking Structure 2 began on November 4, 2019. The initial plans included 62 EV charging ports. In an effort to accelerate EV adoption in San Mateo County, it was identified that additional charging infrastructure could be added during the construction of Parking Structure 2. While adding EV charging infrastructure at the time of new construction can be cheaper than retrofitting existing parking facilities, there are costs associated with updating plans and the purchase of additional equipment.
