BACKGROUND:

The Arts Commission was created to promote and encourage the arts, to serve in an advisory capacity to the Board of Supervisors, to prepare and update the County’s strategic and cultural plan, and act as a liaison with arts organizations in order to ensure collaboration and coordination related to culture and art activities in San Mateo County.

DISCUSSION:

Belinda Arriaga is being recommended to serve an initial partial term for a District 3 seat that was vacated mid-term by Richard Rojo.

Dr. Belinda Arriaga is the founder and Executive Director of ALAS (Ayudando Latinos A Soñar) in Half Moon Bay. She is also an associate professor at UC-Berkeley. Her experience with the first Latino arts program in Half Moon Bay helped establish an opportunity to improve access to the arts for an underserved community. Her deep involvement with the diverse community along the Coastside will enhance her leadership as part of the District 3 representation for the San Mateo County Arts Commission.
