Recommendation for reappointments to the Commission on Aging, each for a term ending June 30, 2023:
A) Walter Batera, for a third term; and
B) Scott McMullin, for a third term; and
C) Christina Dimas-Kahn, for a third term; and
D) Cherie Querol-Moreno, for a third term; and
E) Jean Hastie, for a first full term; and
F) Marita Leth, for a first full term.

BACKGROUND:
The mission of the San Mateo County Commission on Aging (CoA) is to improve the quality of life for seniors in San Mateo County through the promotion of independence, self-sufficiency, mental and physical health, as well as community involvement.
DISCUSSION:
Walter Batara and Scott McMullin have each served on the Commission since July 2014 and are being recommended to serve their third terms.
Commissioner Batara is a resident of Daly City and has actively led efforts in the North County to improve the lives of all persons, especially older adults. In addition to serving on the Commission he devotes his life to volunteer work through his associations with the Pilipino Bayanihan Resource Center, Our Lady of Mercy Knights of Columbus Council, the Daly City Lions Club, and many others.
Commissioner McMullin most recently served as Chair of the CoA. Under his leadership, the Commission has continued to identify and address the needs of older adults and people with disabilities living in the County. In addition to his work on the Commission, he is co-founder of Sequoia Villages whose mission is to help seniors age safely and comfortably at home. The Villages model is based on identifying and placing volunteers to support the needs of older adults living independently and he continues to advocate and assist the expansion of this model in other parts of the County.
Christina Dimas-Kahn and Cherie Querol-Moreno have served on the Commission since their partial terms began September of 2014 and are being recommended to serve their third terms.
Commissioner Dimas-Kahn is a seasoned Commissioner who brings her experience as a healthcare educator and advocate to her role on the Commission. Her knowledge of the needs of older adults in San Mateo County has been instrumental in identifying middle-income seniors who are growing in numbers throughout the County. She led efforts to establish a committee of the Commission to discuss and develop support for this important group.
Commissioner Querol-Moreno is a retired journalist and is active with many groups especially in North County. She is a leader with the Alliance for Community Empowerment (ALLICE), a volunteer columnist for several Philippine publications, an active member of St. Andrew Parish in Daly City, and the recipient of several honors and awards for her work on behalf of the Filipino Community.
Jean Hastie and Marita Leth have each served on the Commission since their initial partial terms began November 2017.
Commissioner Hastie is currently the Chair of CoA. She is both professionally and personally committed to supporting the needs of older residents in our County. Her faith has brought her to work for Sisters of Mercy of the Americas in Burlingame where she supports the needs of sisters who are aging in place on the Burlingame campus and also to help with special projects addressing senior needs. She personally has 30 years of experience as a family caregiver through both roles has seen the challenges being faced by those aging here. Her goal is to help those who want to stay in the County age in place.
Commissioner Leth resides on the Coast and is keenly aware of the needs of older adults living in this area of the County. She brings her experiences as a caregiver for her husband, an educator for youth especially those with special education needs, and her volunteer work with senior organizations and church committees to the Commission. She is instrumental in keeping the needs of the Coastal community in the forefront of work being done by the Commission.
