BACKGROUND:
Your Board has adopted similar resolutions designating parking restrictions.
Section 22507 et al. of the California Vehicle Code and Section 7.30.010 of the County of San Mateo Ordinance Code provides that local authorities may prohibit or restrict the stopping, parking, or standing of vehicles by resolution or ordinance.
The Department of Public Works (Department) received a request for a “No Parking” zone on A Street in the unincorporated area of Daly City to allow for greater sight distance and allow for vehicles to safely turn onto A Street from El Camino Real.
The Department investigated the request and observed vehicles making a right turn onto A Street from north bound El Camino Real are compromised with a narrow travel path when vehicles traveling in the opposite direction of A Street are yielding to enter onto El Camino Real near the intersection.
DISCUSSION:
The Department has evaluated the proposal and determined the proposed “No Parking” zone on A Street is warranted and would benefit the community. The Department recommends adoption of a resolution to restrict parking at this location.
This proposed action would remove 20 feet of parking on the southern side of A Street, allowing for greater sight distance, and improved clearance for vehicles.
The objections and support received to date are summarized in Attachment A.
The location of parking zones and other traffic restrictions on County-maintained streets are currently shown on maps in the Department of Public Works office and will be made available in list form on maps on the Department’s website. The master list will be updated to reflect the recommended changes, if your Board approves the proposed resolution.
County Counsel has reviewed and approved the resolution as to form.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The cost of installing signs and painting parking zone markings varies and averages approximately $550 per parking zone. Costs are included in the Fiscal Year 2019-20 Adopted Budget. There is no impact to the General Fund.
