BACKGROUND:

The Team of the Month program was established in September 2018 to recognize and honor County teams who consistently demonstrate an outstanding level of performance.

Our Team of the Month for February 2020 is the Facilities Maintenance and Operations Team from the Department of Public Works.  Team members include: Gary Behrens, Patrick Oliver, Dave Goodwin, Matt Galbraith, Brian Cresta, Jason Michalski, Juan Virgen, Max Posada, Santiago Deras, Joaquin Vigil and Damien Harrison.

DISCUSSION:

When faced with a challenge, the Facilities Maintenance and Operations (FM&O) team never disappoints.  The team was tasked with brightening up the walkway between the Redwood City campus parking garage and the Hall of Justice.  Led by FM&O Manager Gary Behrens, the team used their creative skills to re-purpose unwanted concrete cigarette receptacles and fiberglass aggregate planters to create an inviting and pleasant experience for pedestrians as they walk toward the Hall of Justice.  The plantings reflect colorful drought tolerate landscaping that will require minimal watering.  Many of the cigarette receptacles were strategically near the corners of planter areas to discourage pedestrians from "cutting the corner" and walking on the landscaping.

Also, included in the project is the construction of a trellis made from a discarded redwood fence that was removed to make way for the construction of the Child Care Center.  The trellis, which is up-lit with LED lighting is DPW's memorial to Mark Hahn, a longtime DPW Construction Project Manager who was the project manager for the construction of the Child Care Center.  Mark passed away unexpectedly while serving with DPW, but his memory will live on every time we walk past the trellis.  Also included is the introduction of tall bamboo plantings up-lit with LED lighting between 555 County Center and the Parking Garage.  Walk through the areas at night to get the ideal effect. All LED lighting is capable of changing colors and can be programmed to display red, white, and blue colors for national holidays.

This project was a creative effort to design a warm and friendly environment using water efficient plants with new water saving irrigation methods along with color enhancing LED lighting.  The FM&O team worked with contractor Rick Gallo from Bayscape Landscaping and his team that included: Oscar Lara Ceras, Efrain Maldinera and Hipolito Aquino.

San Mateo County is fortunate to have Facilities Maintenance and Operations Team staff as an outstanding team in the County.
