BACKGROUND:
On November 14, 2006, your Board adopted Resolution No. 068389 approving and adopting the Standard Plans and Specifications of the State of California, Department of Transportation (Caltrans), dated May 2006 as the Standard Plans and Specifications for the County of San Mateo.

The Department of Public Works has previously recommended, and your Board has approved the use of Caltrans Standard Plans and Specifications as these standards are used statewide, and contractors and suppliers of construction material or equipment are familiar with these standards. Caltrans periodically updates these standards and publishes revised standards.

DISCUSSION:
The 2018 Caltrans Standard Plans and Specifications are the current version of these standards and have been substantially modified in format and content from the prior version approved and adopted by your Board. Caltrans will be requiring that local Projects receiving Federal Funds administered by Caltrans and projects within the Caltrans right-of-way adhere to the 2018 Caltrans Standard Plans and Specifications. Therefore, adoption of the 2018 Standard Plans and Specifications will position the County appropriately for these types of projects and funding opportunities.
