Recommendation for the appointment of Lelan Anders to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) Commission, for an initial partial term ending June 30, 2021.

BACKGROUND:
The Commission reports and makes recommendations to the Board of Supervisors regarding policies, programs, procedures and legislation affecting LGBTQ individuals in San Mateo County, and provides outreach and support to at-risk and underserved LGBTQ populations within San Mateo County, including youth, communities of color, non-English speakers, older adults, and immigrants. The Commission promotes transgender inclusion among private and public entities in San Mateo County, including access to health care and to gendered spaces such as bathrooms and shelters. It develops initiatives to support LGBTQ families with children in San Mateo County and provides a public forum for input from the LGBTQ community to identify unmet needs.
DISCUSSION:
Lelan Anders is being recommended to serve a partial term for a seat formerly held by Kristina Perez who resigned from the Commission in November 2019, thus creating a vacant seat for which the term expires June 30, 2021. Lelan Anders was selected for appointment from a recent LGBTQ Commission recruitment from July 2019.
Lelan is the Employment Training Manager for the City of Sunnyvale’s NOVA program and has been with NOVA since 2000. NOVA is a nonprofit, federally funded employment and training agency that provides customer-focused workforce development services. Lelan regularly volunteers with the San Mateo County Pride Center and is passionate about social justice and mental health services. They have benefited from San Mateo County services such as CORA, the local chapter of NAMI, and with peer support groups at the San Mateo County Pride Center. They have volunteered with the Pride Center by serving on a panel as a non-binary adult and sharing their experience coming out. Lelan and their daughter are residents of Belmont.
