BACKGROUND:
The County of San Mateo has participated in the American Heart Association's Heart Walk since 1999 in support of the County's commitment to health and well-being for our employees and the community. Coaches from 33 County departments came together to recruit walkers and raise funds to combat heart disease. The event brought together over 600 County employees while promoting wellness and engagement. This year, the County raised $96,370 for the American Heart Association, bringing us to nearly $1,000,000 raised since 1999.

DISCUSSION:
The 2019 Peninsula Heart Walk was held on October 3rd at the County's Coyote Point Park in San Mateo. County and Court employees were encouraged to sign up to participate in the event, which included a mile walk, yoga, Zumba, and a healthy lunch. The San Mateo Credit Union and SamTrans provided financial support and in-kind donations, respectively, to offset event costs. In addition, 41 County employees served as coaches by volunteering their time to organize their department/division teams and help make the event a success.

The attached resolution honors the donors and coaches for being involved in this exciting and impactful event. In addition, the resolution is the vehicle by which the Board of Supervisors formally accepts financial and in-kind donations for the event. Event donations include a $3,000 monetary sponsorship from the San Mateo Credit Union to purchase t-shirts and in-kind donations from SamTrans which consist of the three buses to transport employees to and from the event.
