BACKGROUND:
In April 2015, Behavioral Health and Recovery Services (BHRS) released a Request for Proposals (RFP) for Prevention and Early Intervention (PEI) services for youth delivered in a non-traditional behavioral health setting, using the Project SUCCESS and Seeking Safety service models. Puente de la Costa Sur (Puente) responded with a proposal that was selected for the provision of these services.

DISCUSSION:
Through the Project SUCCESS service model, Puente prevents and reduces substance use and abuse, along with associated behavioral health issues among high risk, multi-problem youth ages 9 to 18. The early intervention services operate in communities with a high proportion of underserved populations, focusing on middle school and high school aged students.

The Seeking Safety curriculum ended June 30, 2019, and was replaced by an alternative curriculum currently under pilot, Mindfulness-Based Substance Abuse Treatment (MBSAT), with a focus on trauma-informed co-occurring prevention. The MBSAT curriculum integrates best practices from the fields of mindfulness, psychotherapy, and substance use reliance treatment in adolescents.
