body

BACKGROUND:

The San Mateo County Domestic Violence Council is responsible for establishing policies to reduce and prevent domestic violence and enhance victim’s services. On October 12, 2017, the Domestic Violence Council voted to modify its membership to include the Coroner as a Categorical voting member.

Members of the Domestic Violence Council evaluate, make recommendations and initiate activities regarding: current responses of law enforcement, the judicial system, health care services and community resources; local government efforts to reduce domestic and family violence; public awareness and public education necessary to effect prevention activities; the collection of statistics and data; the adequacy of federal, state and local laws; and the need for services for those who are victims of domestic and family violence. The Council develops an annual work plan and submits an annual report to the Board of Supervisors.

DISCUSSION:

The Domestic Violence Council’s recommendation to revise its membership to include the Coroner as a Categorical Member was initiated because of the Coroner's role as the Chair of the Domestic Violence Death Review team and accidental removal of the Coroner as a Categorical voting member in a previously submitted resolution. The Coroner is responsible for reviewing all Domestic Violence deaths in San Mateo County and his/her insight is critical to the Domestic Violence Council.
