BACKGROUND:
The San Mateo County Children's Fund (CF) accepts cash and in-kind donations as well as raises funds for foster and low-income children in San Mateo County. CF serves more than 4,000 children annually providing essentials such as clothing, backpacks, holiday gifts, computers and Halloween costumes.
Administrative costs to operate CF are funded through the County of San Mateo. All services and goods provided to the children of San Mateo County through CF are based solely on private and community donations. One hundred percent (100%) of all donations go to children in need. Also, except basic administrative costs, the majority of the services provided are by volunteers. CF manages an average of 300-350 volunteers annually.
DISCUSSION:
The Children's Fund aims to serve over 4,500 children in FY 2017-18 and anticipates receiving services from up to 300 volunteers. The majority of donations received by CF are under $2,500 per donor. All donations presented to CF are reviewed by the Human Services Agency Director to ensure that they are appropriate and in compliance with County Policy. Recently, CF received a donation in excess of $2,500. Per Administrative Memo-B3, all donations, gifts or bequests exceeding $2,500 must be approved by the Board of Supervisors.
