Recommendation for the appointment of Elizabeth Stone representing District 2, to the San Mateo County Arts Commission, for a term ending December 31, 2022.

BACKGROUND:

The Arts Commission was created to promote and encourage the arts, to serve in an advisory capacity to the Board of Supervisors, to prepare and update the County’s strategic and cultural plan, and act as a liaison with arts organizations in order to ensure collaboration and coordination related to culture and art activities in San Mateo County.

 

DISCUSSION:

Elizabeth Stone has a deep interest in the arts having a work history in San Francisco that includes organizing outdoor cultural events at the Yerba Buena Center gardens and providing marketing expertise to the Symphony and ODC/Dance Company. She was a two-term San Mateo Parks and Recreation Commissioner and served as President of the San Mateo Dance Association. Ms. Stone has a PhD in Special Education from UC Berkeley, has taught Child & Adolescent Development, and is, currently, the CEO of an educational services program. Ms. Stone is the parent of two, young-adult, working artists and a long-time resident of San Mateo.

 

This appointment contributes to the 2025 Shared Vision statement of a Collaborative Community. Our diverse population works well together to build strong communities, effective government and a prosperous economy, civic engagement - including voting, public service, charitable giving, volunteerism, and participation in public discussions of important issues - is uniformly high among the diverse population of San Mateo County.
