BACKGROUND:

The Smart Family Foundation makes an annual donation to the San Mateo County Parks Department (“Department”) for the explicit benefit of Coyote Point Recreation Area (“Coyote Point”).  While the Smart Family Foundation focuses on arts, education, medicine, and environmental issues, this philanthropic organization has funded many park improvements throughout Coyote Point, including new picnic tables, park-wide paving, and renovation of the Beach Group Picnic Area. The donation in question will help fund much needed roadway and facility renovation projects.

DISCUSSION:

For FY 2018-19, the Smart Family Foundation is providing $180,000 in a cash donation for various projects at Coyote Point. The table below reflects cost estimates for each project.

Smart Family Foundation Donation for FY 2018-19

Roadway Safety and Improvements

$30,000

Miscellaneous Facility Improvements

$20,000

Hazardous Tree Assessment and Abatement (ongoing)

$90,000

County Counsel has reviewed and approved the resolutions as to form.

Acceptance of the Smart Family Foundation donation contributes to the Shared Vision 2025 outcome of an Environmentally Conscious Community by providing financial support to the Department for important improvement projects that enrich park visitor experience and protect park resources.

FISCAL IMPACT:

The amount of donations to be received from the Smart Family Foundation for any fiscal year is not known at the time the budget is prepared. An ATR is being requested to recognize the unanticipated revenue of $180,000 and to make corresponding appropriations in services and supplies and fixed assets.

There is no fiscal impact on Net County Cost.
