BACKGROUND:
Since its formation in November 2006 as the first Food System Alliance (Alliance) in California, the San Mateo County Food System Alliance (SMFSA) has been working to bring together stakeholders, partners, and all the parts of the local food system into a cohesive group capable of creating an ever healthier and more vibrant local food economy.

The SMFSA relies on local perspectives, ranging from coastside farmers and fishermen to bayside community service workers struggling against poverty and obesity. SMFSA is also the first Alliance in California to seat both the County's Agricultural Commissioner and its Public Health Officer, creating a unique opportunity to link local food production to healthy citizens and improve food system coordination.

DISCUSSION:
On July 9, 2018, Public Health, Policy and Planning released a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a contractor to provide Network Manager Services to manage the SMFSA. Since the RFP resulted in only one qualified contractor responding, the RFP review committee selected Community Alliance for Family Farmers (CAFF) to provide this service to the County.
