body

BACKGROUND:

The Youth Commission was established in 1993 and created to address issues affecting youth in San Mateo as an advisory body to the Board of Supervisors. In its role, the Youth Commission strives to close the gap between adult and youth perspectives, increase awareness of and advocate on behalf of youth issues, and present policy recommendations and projects that serve the community.

The Board of Supervisors is responsible for appointing new members to the Youth Commission, based on interviews with applicants. The Youth Commission may have up to 25 members. Each Youth Commissioner is appointed to a one-year term of office that ends June 30, 2019, and may serve up to four terms until the age of 21.

DISCUSSION:

On July 10, 2018, 25 youth were appointed to the Youth Commission. In September, a vacancy opened on the Youth Commission. It is recommended that the Board of Supervisors appoint Carrie Ho, a sophomore at Mills High School, to the Youth Commission for a one-year term that began on July 1, 2018 and ends June 30, 2019.
