BACKGROUND:
On September 12, 2017, your Board adopted Resolution 075446 and approved the Mitigated Negative Declaration and Mitigation Monitoring and Reporting Program report in compliance with Section 21081.6 of the California Public Resources Code. The existing water tank is located on a sloping hillside adjacent to the San Mateo Medical Center (SMMC) campus parking lot. The water tank was constructed in 1938, before California had well-established seismic codes and before acute-care general hospitals were under the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) jurisdiction. The tank has undergone significant deterioration over the past seven decades and is now required to meet current seismic requirements.

DISCUSSION:
The Department of Public Works (Department) recommends constructing a new replacement tank in the southwest corner of the SMMC parking lot behind the existing tank, which would remain fully operational during the construction phase of the new tank.
