BACKGROUND:
Environmental Health's (EH) Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Program was formally established in 1992, after passage of AB939, the California Integrated Waste Management Act. This State law requires local jurisdictions, such as the County, to manage household hazardous programs.

EH's HHW Program provides opportunities for residents, small businesses, and municipalities to safely reduce, reuse, recycle and/or dispose of residential hazardous wastes. New aspects of the HHW Program include door-to-door services for residents and an expanded Product Reuse program.

The HHW Program operates a permanent collection facility at the County's Tower Road campus and multiple satellite and temporary collection sites throughout the County. The HHW Program also provides support to local retailers serving as retail HHW collection sites and businesses with small amounts of HHW.

In operating its HHW Program, EH contracts with vendors to provide additional labor, equipment, supplies, transportation, and disposal services. The HHW Program's current vendor agreement for processing and disposing residential hazardous waste is with Stericycle Environmental Solutions, Inc. (Stericycle).
