BACKGROUND:
San Mateo Medical Center (SMMC) has been using Baxter Healthcare Corporation's Sigma Spectrum pumps to administer intravenous fluids to its patients since 2011. The pumps currently in use are reaching the end of their useful life and need to be replaced. As a result, SMMC has been spending approximately $17,000 per month on rental pumps to ensure that SMMC has enough working pumps on hand to handle patient volumes.

DISCUSSION:
SMMC's Clinical Quality Value Analysis team evaluated several brands of pumps with key stakeholders at the medical center and recommended replacing the current pumps with a newer version of the Sigma Spectrum pumps. The newer Sigma Spectrum pumps use the current virtual server and have minimal impact on SMMC's information technology infrastructure. In addition, the new pumps have a similar functionality that will reduce the staff hours needed for training. Therefore, based on this information SMMC is requesting that your Board waive the Request for Bid process.

The resolution has been reviewed and approved by County Counsel as to form.

The resolution contains the County's standard provisions allowing amendment of the County fiscal obligations by a maximum of $25,000 (in aggregate).

The purchase contributes to the Shared Vision 2025 outcome of a Healthy Community by making sure that SMMC has a dependable supply of intravenous pumps on hand to meet patient volumes. It is anticipated th...
