BACKGROUND:

The mission of the San Mateo County Commission on Aging  (CoA) is to improve the quality of life for seniors in San Mateo County through the promotion of independence, self-sufficiency, mental and physical health, as well as community involvement.

 

DISCUSSION:

Scott McMullin has been a member of the Commission on Aging since July 1, 2014 and is requesting reappointment a second term on the commission. Scott was elected for his second year as the Vice-Chair of the Commission. He is active in community activities, including the Villages of San Mateo County. Scott is the retired Quality Assurance Director for Nestle USA.

 

Walter Batara has been a member since July 1, 2014 and is requesting reappointment for a second term on the commission. Walter’s civic associations include The Knights of Columbus Foundation for Developmentally Challenged Adults and Children, the Pilipino Bayanihan Resource Center, and the Daly City Lions Club.

 

Christina Dimas-Kahn and Cherie Querol-Moreno have been members since September 27, 2011 and are requesting to be reappointed for a third term. Christina Dimas-Kahn is the Chairwoman of the Commission on Aging for her second year. Both Christina and Cherie work at Self Help for the Elderly’s HICAP (Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program). Cherie has completed 200 hours of violence prevention and cultural competence training and has been the Executive Director of the Alliance for Community Empowerment (ALLICE) focusing on the prevention of domestic violence.

 

Aurea Cruz has been a member since June 9, 2006 and is requesting reappointment for one year, completing her 12 year service on the commission. Aurea received a master’s degree in public administration and certification as a nursing assistant. During her tenure on the Commission, Aurea has proudly served on a variety of committees and is the CoA liaison to the Commission on Disabilities.

 

These reappointments contribute to the 2025 Shared Vision statement of a Collaborative Community. Our diverse population works well together to build strong communities, effective government and a prosperous economy, civic engagement - including voting, public service, charitable giving, volunteerism, and participation in public discussions of important issues - is uniformly high among the diverse population of San Mateo County.
