BACKGROUND:
There has been a shortage of adult psychiatrists in California and in the nation for the past several years. Correctional Health Services (CHS) has found it difficult to fill adult psychiatrist positions, specifically with forensic clinical experience. Stanford Health Care, through its arrangement with the Stanford University School of Medicine, is establishing a forensic clinical outreach fellowship program that will attract highly qualified psychiatrists who can provide necessary forensic evaluations for the court system, in addition to providing needed clinical psychiatric services within the jails. Due to the opening of the Behavioral Health Pods and difficulty in filling such positions, CHS has an increased need for psychiatric services.

DISCUSSION:
Stanford Health Care has agreed to provide psychiatric services at San Mateo County's Maguire and Maple Street adult correctional facilities. Directly supervised by the CHS Chief Psychiatrist, Stanford Health Care psychiatrists will provide two clinic days a week rotating between the two facilities. They will provide diagnostic evaluations; prescribe medication; educate inmates about medications; and respond to crises in the facilities.
