body

BACKGROUND:

The Planning Commission serves the County and its communities by preparing, administering, and enforcing land use plans and development regulations that protect public safety, preserve agricultural and environmental resources, address housing and transportation needs, and create healthy and prosperous communities, in a manner that fosters community engagement and provides exceptional levels of service.  Pursuant to the San Mateo County Ordinance Code, a Commissioner shall be appointed to the Planning Commission from each of the County’s five supervisorial Districts.  The Planning Commissioner currently lacks a Commissioner from the County’s First supervisorial District.

DISCUSSION:

Supervisor Dave Pine recommends the appointment of Kumkum Gupta to serve as the District 1 representative to the San Mateo County Planning Commission.

Ms. Gupta is a South San Francisco resident, now retired after a life-long career in the technology field.  Her civic activities include Project Read, South San Francisco Public Library Foundation, UCSF Women's Health Patient Advisory Council, Senior Project Evaluator for El Camino High School, volunteer for Community Outreach Programs of South San Francisco and tutor to elementary school children. Her experience working with diverse groups of people and reviewing documents with attention to detail makes her well suited to serve as a Planning Commissioner.

This appointment contributes to the 2025 Shared Vision statement of a Collaborative Community. Our diverse population works well together to build strong communities, effective government and a prosperous economy, civic engagement - including voting, public service, charitable giving, volunteerism, and participation in public discussions of important issues - is uniformly high among the diverse population of San Mateo County.
