BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION:

The Youth Jobs Summit was held on April 15 & 22, 2017 by Supervisor Slocum’s Office and supported by the Human Resources Department. The purpose of the Summit was to develop and mentor under-resourced youth and transitioned aged youth to be successful through training designed to boost self-confidence and increase networking, application, resume, and interview skills. Youth from Redwood City, North Fair Oaks, East Palo Alto and Belle Haven were encouraged to sign up to participate in the event.

The two-day event was hosted in conjunction with community based organizations One East Palo Alto, SWAG, and Siena Youth Center.

Day one was a day of instruction and included a keynote speech from a Comcast executive, professional attire fashion show (a visual demonstration for the youth about appropriate workplace attire), networking activities, speed interviews, and other resources including a new workbook designed to help each youth define their personal values, definition of success, and learn skills to help them keep the job once they land the job. The youth worked with professional partners, County employees and local professionals, to participate in mock interviews, create resumes, and practice networking. On day two the youth interviewed with organizations for summer internships and received training on preparing for success in the workplace.

The attached resolution honors the sponsors, donors, volunteers, and participants for being involved in this exciting event. In addition, the resolution is the vehicle by which the Board of Supervisors formally accepts financial and in kind donations for the event. Event donations include a $2,500 monetary sponsorship from Google, $2,500 monetary sponsorship from Sares Regis Educational Foundation, $500 monetary sponsorship from the San Mateo Credit Union, in kind donations from James Stanfield catering which consisted of food and beverages, and an in kind donation of professional attire from Stitch Fix.

County Counsel has reviewed and approved the resolution as to form.

Approval of this resolution contributes to the Shared Vision 2025 outcome of a Collaborative Community by supporting endeavors that strengthen our community partners while preparing our youth in underserved areas for success.
