body
BACKGROUND:
For the last 23 years, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, along with various donors, sponsors a one-week summer camp program, known as the Sheriff’s Training and Recreation (STAR) Camp, for students between 5th and 8th grade. Sheriff’s Office employees supervise the camp. STAR Camp is held at the YMCA’s Camp Loma Mar, where 130 boys and girls engage in a variety of outdoor activities. The purpose of STAR Camp is to instill teamwork and self-confidence among the students, while also establishing a bond between law enforcement and San Mateo County youth.
DISCUSSION:
Each year, the Sheriff’s Office receives various donations to support STAR Camp. For FY 2015-16, the Sheriff’s Office received a total amount of $38,750 in cash donations from the following donors:
Danford Foundation |
$3,000 |
Lawrence Bowman Family |
$15,000 |
Scandling Family Foundation |
$10,750 |
Woodside Community Foundation |
$7,000 |
Lucky Chances, Inc. |
$3,000 |
Accepting these donations aligns with Administrative Memorandum B-3 which requires that all gifts having a value of over $2,500 be acknowledged in writing by the department head and referred to the Board of Supervisors for acceptance.
Without the generosity of the various donors, STAR Camp would not be able to continue in its current capacity.
County Counsel has reviewed and approved the resolution as to form.
FISCAL IMPACT:
There is no impact on Net County Cost.
