Adopt a resolution affirming the County of San Mateo’s commitment to the well-being of current and future generations by supporting the United Nations Declaration on Future Generations.

BACKGROUND:

San Mateo County envisions a future where all residents can grow and thrive in communities rooted in fairness, foresight, and connection. With more than a quarter of residents under 24 and nearly one in five over 65, the County recognizes the importance of policies that serve people of all ages. Building on efforts such as declaring loneliness a public health crisis and investing in youth leadership, this resolution extends the County’s legacy of forward-looking, inclusive governance.

 

DISCUSSION:

The resolution reaffirms the County’s commitment to intergenerational well-being and supports the United Nations Declaration on Future Generations. It encourages continued leadership in making long-term thinking, fairness, and youth partnership central to County decision-making, planning, and service delivery. By recognizing the deep connections between people, the planet, and communities, the County commits to future-focused governance that promotes resilience, sustainability, and shared purpose.
