Recommendation for the reappointment of Stephen Seymour to the San Mateo County Arts Commission, representing District 1, for a first full term ending December 31, 2026.

BACKGROUND:

The Arts Commission was created to promote and encourage the arts, to serve in an advisory capacity to the Board of Supervisors, to prepare and update the County’s strategic and cultural plan, and act as a liaison with arts organizations in order to ensure collaboration and coordination related to culture and art activities in San Mateo County.

 

DISCUSSION:

Stephen Seymour has served on the commission since his partial term began in April 2019 and is being recommended to serve for a first full term from January 1, 2023 through December 31, 2026.

 

Stephen Seymour was born in Lubbock Texas in 1961. At an early age he developed an interest in art and started painting and drawing, painting every day. While at Edison High School, he attended summer classes at the Art Institute in Pasadena. In 1980 Seymour attended Parsons School of Design at the New School for Social Research in New York City. After school, he spent some time designing textiles. In 1984, Seymour joined FedEx, and after 32 years there retired to paint full time. In 2021, Seymour was part of a group that started the Peninsula Art Foundation, of which he is Board Chair. In 2022, he accepted the role of Director of the Fine Arts Galleria exhibit at the San Mateo County Fair.
