BACKGROUND:

In today’s digital age, reliable and affordable high-speed internet access is essential for individuals and businesses to thrive. Approximately 7% of San Mateo County residents currently lack adequate access to high-speed internet. This digital divide disproportionately affects lower-income communities, limiting opportunities for telehealth, education, employment, and business development.

The Board of Supervisors has committed to initiatives that align with state and national goals for universal broadband access. Previous efforts, including the development of a digital connectivity map, have aimed to assess and improve the county's digital infrastructure, highlighting the need for further action.

DISCUSSION:

This resolution asserts the critical importance of high-speed internet access, akin to that of electricity and water, in promoting equality of opportunity and access to essential public goods. By declaring the importance of this issue, the County of San Mateo can foster an inclusive digital environment that empowers all residents and businesses, particularly those in underserved communities.

By endorsing this resolution, the County of San Mateo reaffirms the commitment to working to bridge the digital divide and enhancing the overall welfare and economic growth of San Mateo County.
