BACKGROUND:
The Coroner's Office utilizes and relies upon the County's Motorola APX7000 digital trunked radio communications system, which are now outdated. It is critical that Coroner's Office personnel are equipped with updated, efficient, and effective communications technology to ensure seamless and uninterrupted communications as they carry out their mission to serve residents throughout San Mateo County.

DISCUSSION:
The Coroner's Office intends to replace and upgrade its older radios with 13 new Motorola APX 8000 all-band 4-in-1 portable two-way radios. These radio devices are equipped with the latest technologies for 7/800MHz and multi-mode system access, adaptive audio engine and ultra-loud speakers, secure voice/data, multiple hardware encryptions, and firmware and software updates, and will offer Coroner's Office personnel limitless interoperability, clear audio, and seamless Wi-Fi connectivity.

Thus, staff recommends that the Board authorize the appropriation of $116,500 in Proposition 172 funding to cover the one-time costs for replacement and upgrades of the radio communications equipment relied on by the Coroner's Office.
