BACKGROUND:
Federal funds have been made available through the states to strengthen national public health and medical emergency preparedness and response infrastructure. These funds support planning, training, medical surge capacity, supply stockpiling, and overall disaster readiness.

DISCUSSION:
The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) division coordinates emergency disaster planning and response for San Mateo County Health.

In June 2022, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) awarded EMS five years of grant funding to support public health and medical emergency preparedness activities, including emergency preparedness training and healthcare coordination, epidemiology and disease surveillance capacity, pandemic planning and medical supply storage, and improvements to emergency communications with hospitals and first responders.

Consistent with San Mateo County Health's mission to protect and promote community health through preparedness and coordinated response, the County participates in the Association of Bay Area Health Officers (ABAHO), a regional collaborative of Bay Area local health departments that coordinates public health preparedness planning, information sharing, and regional response initiatives.
